Gone are the days where we had to rely solely on instinct or “what looks good.” A/B testing takes luck out of the equation by comparing the performance of a single variation in your marketing content. It looks at “A” and “B” to learn which converts better.

Consider the impact A/B testing can have on your e-commerce business. Through A/B testing you can determine what is making some convert and others not. In this article I will discuss ways for you to get the most out of A/B testing in terms of e-commerce.

Tools of the trade

The only way to see results from the use of A/B testing is to constantly perform tests. The easiest way to get started is to use the free Google Website Optimizer tool, here’s a 5 minute tutorial video to get you started. There’s a range of free and cheap tools but Google Website Optimizer is the natural place to start and will complement the data you already have from your Google Analytics account. Here are 5 of the top free and cheap tools and resources to get you started plus a professional solution for those with deeper pockets!

Google Website Optimizer

is a great starting place once you have watched the video in the above link you can get started here. The tool is quite easy to use, Google provides the code that you simply need to add to your site which allows you to split traffic between pages and report on the results. You do need set up a goal so you have a conversion to measure. You will then have easy to understand reports on conversion rates for versions A and B of your pages and can keep testing and tweaking to further increase conversions. The best place to start is the great 5 minute video in the link above.

WordPress themes, is a great plugin which is for blogs or other sites based on WordPress as you can test various different templates. The tool works by connecting with your Google analytics account where you create a custom segment to report on version A and version B, your two different themes. The plugin assigns cookies to users so that half get served one theme and half another. Setting up goals on Google analytics allows you to measure metrics such as which theme gets the most ad clicks.

Five Second Test which allows very simple A/B testing of images but isn’t really true A/B testing. This works as follows: you submit two different images of pages (so a screenshot or a mock-up of a new page) and set questions you want answered about the page. Testers are shown the page for 5 seconds and the answer the questions. The answers are then collated and you are sent the results. This is useful for new sites that haven’t yet launched or don’t have enough traffic to A/B test.

Which Test Won shows the winners of various A/B tests which includes some surprising results. This is a great resource for inspiration for what to test and some new ideas to try. You can get some information free but for $45 a year you get access to the results of over 164 real life tests.

Maxymiser represent the top end of conversion testing with A/B and multivariate testing and various other methods. If you want to go a top end fully managed solution and don’t have the right expertise in-house then these guys provide professional solutions.

What to Test

Consider testing a habit well worth getting into and something that will enhance your overall marketing strategy. Amazon is known for repeatedly testing its buy now and add to cart buttons. You shouldn’t limit yourself to one design element, however. Other elements to test include:

- Email Subject Lines

One way for a visitor to get to your online store the fastest is through e-marketing. You could pick two noticeably different subject lines and send them to a number of email recipients. At the end of the testing period, the subject line that receives the most clicks is more effective.

- Product Descriptions

Are your product descriptions succinct yet provide enough information to effectively draw the visitor in? Not only can you test the description itself, but you may also try testing the length.

- Sign up Page Headlines

Also consider the copy a powerful element of conversion. You want the sign-up page to be as easy and intuitive as possible. Generate copy that is going to foster an easy registration process. You might test variations of sign up headlines letting the visitor know how long the process will take or the benefits of signing up.

- Purchase Buttons

Purchase Buttons are imperative for the success of your website and overall conversion. You don’t want it to blend in with the background, so choose a contrasting color to make your button pop. It’s also a good idea to have the test for a call to action button such as “Buy Now” run longer than a Pay Per Click Landing Page.

Once you determine what to test it’s just a matter of running that test. Keep in mind it’s best to pick one element for your test at a time.

Conclusion

If you wish to significantly improve conversion rates for your e-commerce business, A/B testing is well worth experimenting with. It’s a great tool not only to increase sales, but to learn where visitors are on your site and why. Through testing add to cart buttons, email subject lines, and purchase buttons you’re one step closer to increased sales and conversions.

Although basically the service is online, but the order will be delivered directly to your address when it is completed. Usually, the service will add some extra charge for the delivery service. If you choose the service which is located in your surroundings, you can take care of the delivery by your own selves so that you can save some money. However, you must not believe it easily. Thorough investigation about certain service will definitely be helpful for you. Once again, patience is needed here. However, you will find that the time which is spent to make the investigation will be worthy your satisfaction.

The job market for designers is said to be growing at a rate consistent with other jobs, at about 13% growth. There is plenty of room for new talent, but there will also be plenty of talented competition. In order to be a successful graphic designer in the future, you must have an edge. The following tips will help point you in the right direction for succeeding in such a competitive career.

Focus on the Right Niche

Finding a niche is probably one of the most important decisions of your career. There will always be many other talented graphic designers with whom you will compete, and to gain new clients and jobs, you will have to stand out from the others. One way to do this is to focus on the niche in which you are especially talented. This may be business cards, logos, web design, 3D effects, animation. If you focus on what you enjoy and perform exceptionally well, you will easily stand out from the rest.

Incorporate Long Distance Capabilities

As graphic design continues to become more digital, more and more business will be done at long distances. People no longer walk into their neighborhood designer’s office to get their business cards designed and printed. Designers who are great at communicating with clients online will have better success. Figure out the best way to communicate with video conferencing or instant chat so that your client will feel good about doing business with you. Make sure your website is up to spec and easy to navigate. If you design print materials, find a reliable online printer who makes it easy to provide consistent quality and a quick turnaround to your clients.

Build Green Business Practices

Another way to stand out from other great designers is to make an effort to be environmentally friendly. Clients of the future will be more intentional about hiring designers who are green. Make sure to use a printer who prints with non-toxic inks on recycled or certified paper. Make your office greener by reducing waste and recycling. When you are implementing these efforts, inform your potential clients of the steps you are taking, but in a subtle way. For instance, you may want to have a “green” icon on your home page that leads to an explanation of the eco-friendly methods you use.

Get an Appropriate Education

Many designers have a knack for their job. Designing or some other form of art probably came easy to them. However, in order for designers to get the jobs they want, education must be part of the plan. Those who are competent in web design and animation will have an advantage when they are looking for a job, so you will probably want to take some extra classes for these areas of design. It is true that you can be a self-taught designer; however the extra 2-4 years of school plus a valid degree looks good to large firms looking to hire new designers.

Remember the Importance of Sketching

While much of graphic design today is digital, you will always find a need for sketching, painting, and other freehand forms of art. Sketching an idea before taking it to the computer is almost always a must to give you an idea of your general layout. Often a hand-sketched illustration can be scanned into your computer to incorporate into a project for an original touch. While completely designing from scratch in design programs can be done well, do not get lazy and neglect those projects that will benefit from hand sketched mock ups. Oftentimes, going the extra mile is what will distinguish the greats from the mediocres.

Never Stop Learning

A graphic design degree is one that only requires 2-4 years of your life. Unlike the medical field, you are not required to take continued learning classes to keep your title of graphic designer. However, this does not mean you get to be lazy the rest of your career. To keep up with new designers fresh out of school, you need to keep current with new techniques and software. Whenever you see a class or conference that could help improve your skills, take advantage. The fee you pay will more than likely make up for itself in the future clients you may acquire because of your advanced knowledge.

Surround Yourself with Inspiration

No matter your field in graphic design, you probably always have a need to incorporate at least some creativity into your work. This is why it is so important to always keep your creative side alive and fresh. One of the best ways to keep creativity flowing is by always having an inspirational blog post or magazine article handy. The other upside to inspirational resources is that you can keep up with current design trends, a necessity for creating current designs.

Start a Blog

Blogging is an excellent way to keep your name in front of the community, to brand yourself as an expert in your field, and to display your work. If your blog is search engine optimized, which you can either do yourself or hire an expert, then you are much easier to find. Plus, by writing posts, commenting on other blogs, and responding to comments on your own posts, you can become a valued part of the design community. Other young designers will look up to you and clients will value your expertise. Allowing others to comment on the projects you display is also a great way to keep yourself accountable in your workmanship.

Never Stop Networking

Any established business owner, sales rep, senator, realtor, and really any other field of business can tell you that the right connections gets you places. Know the right people, and you may suddenly have an influx of clients just by word-of-mouth marketing alone. So, whenever attending conferences or lectures, bring a boxful of business cards, brochures, or any other appropriate marketing materials. As mentioned before, comment on other designers’ blogs. Create social networking accounts for your business profile. Get involved in community networking opportunities, even if you entire career is online. You may never know what connections a local business owner or neighbor may have.

Take a Trip

The best part about graphic design is that you can work while you travel, most of the time. So take advantage of your career and travel to some inspirational locations. Go to a foreign country, another state, or even just out to a local lake for a night. Revive your creativity, learn a new perspective, and illustrate or photograph the new location. Most of all, find yourself inspired for up to weeks afterward.

It’s going to require a good amount of talent, commitment, business know-how, and a lot of time. Becoming a freelancer can seem overwhelming when considering all the things necessary to be self-employed. Even with all of that, there are still many people
who become successful freelance web designers/developers.

Successful Freelance – Self Assessment of Skills and Abilities

The first thing you need to do is take a serious look at just what you have to offer a client as a freelance web designer/developer. This is a time for honest introspection and reflection. That last thing you want is to get into a situation that is out of your league and have to tell a client you cannot handle their job. Not only will you lose that client, but they will talk about you all over
town and worse, all over the web. Your reputation will likely be destroyed and you’ll starve as a freelancer.

Take a long, hard look at what you have to offer clients. You may want to start by doing an informal industry survey. Make a few phone calls and visit a few sites of web designer/ developers that are already successful at what they do. Then, find out what they offer clients and compare that to your list of abilities and services offered. If you find out you may need a little more training, take the time and do that. If you find you’re able to offer the same or more than the companies you surveyed, then you are probably ready to go into business for yourself.

Successful Freelance – Customer Service is Job One

If there is one thing that aggravates clients the most, it’s poor customer service. You can offer the latest and greatest services as a web designer/developer at the lowest prices in town. However, low prices mean nothing if you’re not good at listening to a customer’s needs, or reacting quickly to a problem.

Make it a point to under-promise and over-deliver, respond to e-mails quickly, and always deliver on time. Offer a money back, satisfaction guarantee. Offer deals to provide the best web hosting service and cheap servers. To clients, successful freelancers are only as good as the customer service they provide.

Successful Freelance – Find Your Specific Niche

When you have surveyed the existing market, you are going to find out who is doing what, in what areas certain companies specialize, and who is handling which clients. When you know this, you can start carving out a niche for the type of services you will offer. You may want to focus your efforts on small business, or certain areas of large business, or perhaps non-profit organizations. It’s critical that to where you want to focus your efforts because you are going tospend a lot of time promoting that single niche.

Self Promotion is Key

If you want to get new business or more business, self-promotion is your most effective tool. You want to put your business name and contact information in and on everything. Stationery, signs, t-shirts, e-mail signatures, websites, and anywhere else you can think of. You want your self-promotional message to inform people of who you are, what you do, and how they can
contact you.

Network regularly with professionals in business both online and in-person. Have a portfolio of your best work easily viewable on your website. Create a blog to promote your business on a regular basis by keeping people up-to-date on what you’re doing and how you have helped others. Make good use of contact forms on blogs that allow clients to send you an e-mail directly. Use FaceBook, Twitter, and any other social media outlets to contact everyone you know, even your friends, and tell them about your new business.

Competitive Advantage

Find one thing that sets you apart from all other competitors and focus all of you efforts on that one thing. Big companies have known this business secret for a long time and use it to their advantage. When a client considers using your services as a freelancer over someone else, what do you want them to perceive about your company? Are you faster at completing certain
projects, or have superior customer service? Maybe it’s your competitive prices that make you stand out above the rest. You can offer them the best web hosting packages, or other freebies. Whatever that one thing is, use it to differentiate yourself from all the others and promote it.

Freelance web designer/developers are needed in today’s market but getting a strong start in any new business may be difficult. Doing research on your particular area, finding about the necessary start-up costs, assessing your talents, and providing great service will put you on the road to a successful career in freelance web design or web development. Get started by designing your own website and volunteer to do websites for other companies for no cost or very little cost. Make these websites your online testimonials for future clients. In a few months, your freelance business will take off and you will be on your way to success.

Maintain a network

Many jobs are not advertised. Many tenders are never floated. It’s your job to learn who’s buying and from whom. And that’s why it’s essential to network. We all know that possibilities for work emerge from wide-ranging networks of friends, relatives, business associates—and even competitors! Skill and tact in approaching these people may take years to develop. But learning how to network effectively may be your most important asset in generating job leads. Your network should be strong enough to get you the leads. But remember that a network doesn’t work if you don’t share information, too; it’s a process of give and take. And generally, you need to give before you take. If you try to take exclusively, the network may work against you instead of for you.

Update your cash flow statement each month

You should track your cash flow every month to ensure that your total income exceeds your total expenses. If it doesn’t, an arrangement should be in place to cover that period using a credit facility. What can be used as a credit facility? There are a number of options. You can use a credit card, a cash-credit facility provided by your banker, a bills discounting or checks purchasing procedure, credit for exports, or many more alternatives. It’s a good policy to have two to three months’ expenses on hand. In practice, this policy doesn’t always work out. However, if your average income is usually less than your average expenses, you’re likely headed for trouble.

Know your bottom line—your average monthly expenditures. The actual figure changes every month. Track that change so that you know when you’re able take calculated risks. In certain situations, you may need to take a job as soon as you get it. But after having a few projects under your belt, you may be able to afford to wait for the larger contract.

It’s useful to remember that over half of all projects are completed behind schedule (mostly for reasons beyond a contractor’s control). If your payment is tied to the completion of a project, it gets delayed too!

Book more work than you can handle

No matter how hard you try, and no matter how good your relationship is with your clients, there are going to be slack periods in your work. Some typical problems are the following:

• Feedback is needed from a client or end user;
• A contact or point person is unavailable (on leave or out of the country);
• E-mails are not being delivered or answered;
• and something more urgent has come up for the client, so your project has been put on the
back burner.

If you’re counting on an assignment to be completed by a certain date, you can likely be sure it won’t be. In this instance, you’ll have to deal with two firm realities: (1) You may have little or no work to do until you get or generate enough input to start work again, and (2) Your payments will be delayed.

An initial reaction may be to try to get more control over the situation, such as asking the client for feedback, or asking for partial payments against work done. But these efforts don’t always work out. If you push beyond a certain threshold, you run the risk of losing business.

A smarter approach is to overload yourself to some extent. Understand that something, somewhere inside any engagement, is going to go wrong, and when it does, you’ll still have billable work in your hands. The risk you run is that if everything happens on time, you may have some peak workload periods. But that can be managed by working extra hours or by hiring outside resources. If you have a good network, you may even be able to share excess work with another freelancer.

Team up with competitors

Healthy competition helps. Cutthroat competition cuts! If you can manage to lay down some ground rules, teaming up occasionally with a competitor will prove helpful. If you team up with a competitor, many operations can be shared and standardized. Together, you can establish benchmarks for delivery, standard rates, standard operating procedures, and so on. In an atmosphere of good competition, all competitors develop, and so does the market.

Keep up the training

It’s natural to make an effort to maximize billable hours. But in so doing, everything else may be compromised. Even training! It’s advisable to consistently take the time to sharpen your skills. Your business depends on it. You should be aware of the latest developments in your industry and related advances in technology. Put training on top of your “to do” list. If possible, take
assignments that teach you something new. Favor these assignments over others. After all, you’re acquiring new skills and even billing for it!

But how much time do we spend thinking about our brand? The fact is branding matters for more than just big businesses. Branding is about more than just packaging and advertising, at its core branding is about creating one unified message that represents the heart of an entity. Whether its sneakers, soda or a blog, branding can help you keep a clear vision of who you are and where you’re going. Even if you’ve never considered yourself a brand before, here are a few good ways to start.

On-site

Start at Home

The first place to start branding is at home, as in, your home page. One of the most identifiable aspects of a brand is a unique and recognizable logo which is used prominently at throughout the website. Designing a logo can take some time and artistry, but with the help of the many free logo creators online, anyone can create a logo without
a degree in graphic design. Once you’ve created a visual representation of your brand there are a few more things to consider.

Consistency

One of the main characteristics of a brand is consistency. Brands are notoriously good at utilizing logos, color schemes and styles consistently in various mediums. From labels to letter head there is always a sense of continuity. Aside from being visually consistent, brands go to great lengths to send an unchanging message.

Scheduling

For a blogger, consistency involves a number of things beyond layout. Blog readers enjoy being able to rely on regular publishing, which is why discipline is an important aspect of branding. Creating a blog schedule and sticking to it, can be difficult but it’s a major step to creating both a strong following and a brand.

Clear Message

It also helps to have one core message that each entry, in some way supports. Yes variety is exciting and everyone has different stores to share, so this doesn’t mean taking a narrow view. It does mean creating a concept that encompasses the over-arching message you want your blog to contain.

What is your POV?

In order to get to the heart of your true motivation, ask yourself these questions. What prompted you to launch a blog in the first place? What message do you want to put out into the world? What makes your voice and perspective different from everyone else? The answers to these kinds of questions can help you define that message and then every
effort from there out, should support those goals.

Off-Site

Social Media

Leaving your site behind, there are a number of ways to bring your brand to the masses. Social media sites have exploded as a way of promoting websites and brands of all kinds including blogs. Any blogger who is not utilizing these channels is missing a huge opportunity.

Utilizing your Logo

When creating social media profiles the use of a logo is key. They can serve as background images and profile pictures to keep your icon in the eyes of friends and followers. But more than that, they can give you a chance to truly connect with other like- minded bloggers. Finding them is the first step, from there it’s about networking, another
important aspect of branding.

Meet the Neighbors

One of the best ways to network with other blogs is to comment on other people’s blogs and participate in communities. Make the most of the most of blog comments and forums by using your logo as a Gravatar and as a forum signature to help promote your brand even further.

Take it To Real Life

Getting away from cyber-world there are a number of ways for a blogger to continue branding even when the computer is off. Logo products are very common among big brands, companies like coca-cola have even created a market for brand themed décor.

Word of Mouth or other Parts of the Body

Now not everyone needs to become that iconic, but it never hurts to have a few branded t- shirts created to bring your blog to life. But where on earth would you wear such apparel? Everywhere and anywhere will work but, strategically speaking, there are few great places. Blogging conferences and local tweet-ups are a good start. But even just the super
market or local community events will do.

Ultimately becoming a brand is about defining who you are and what you represent and presenting that to the world. Opportunities to grow your blog following are everywhere and incorporating branding into what you do will help your messages remain clear while also creating name recognition and a devoted following.

Potential clients want to know that you are fully capable of handling their projects. Looking sloppy gives those clients the impression that you do not care about their work. Here are several tips to help you boost that professional image.

Wear Clothes That Fit

Well fitting clothes will make you feel more comfortable and confident. It will project an image of professionalism, telling your clients that you care about yourself. That professional image is not cultivated if you are wearing something that has a stain or needs to be ironed.

Groom Yourself

Expanding beyond the clothing that you are wearing, take a look at your outward appearance. Does your hair need taming? Do you need to clean under your fingernails? Are your shoes shined? These are three of the little things that can make a difference when you are trying to make your great first impression.

Be Prepared

If you are going to an interview, have extra copies of your resume. If you are presenting to a company, make sure that you have one or two more brochures than needed. Carry a pen and paper with you at all times. Fumbling around for a pen does not make you look professional.

Responsiveness

Immediately provide a response to any questions that you receive. Time is valuable to both you and your client. Offer solutions to your client’s difficulties as quickly as you are able. Respond to your voice mail as soon as possible and prove to your clients that you are attentive and caring.

Quality of Work

Your work is a reflection of your image. Go above and beyond in everything that you do because going that extra mile will really make an impression on your clients. Those clients will tell other potential clients that you were personable and professional.

Listen to Your Customers

When you are on the phone, pay complete attention to what your clients are saying. You are not portraying a professional image if you are distracted while speaking with your customer. Your customers and clients are the most important individuals and deserve your full focus.

If you aren’t careful, your “self-employment” may appear to be “unemployment” to your prospective employer. It is essential to highlight all the skills you have acquired from running your own business. Here are a few of them that you might highlight

Results Oriented

Most employees do not understand that they work for their employer for only one reason: results. Most employees think that they are getting paid just to show up. As a small business owner, you have likely developed the habit of working hard to get the result you want. You know that if you stop working, you don’t make any money. You can let your prospective employer know that you will always be looking for the next result you can achieve for them. You have come to them to work, not to mess around.

Responsibility

As a small business owner, you were responsible for everything that happened within your company. You have no problem handling responsibility. In fact, you’ll take on as much as they are willing to give you. The person who is willing to take on and accept responsibility is rare in the business world, and this quality alone will make you stand out.

Self-supervision

You are the type of person who doesn’t need to be told what to do by anyone else. You know what needs to be done, and you do it. You likely supervised a few employees of your own, so you know how much time is wasted baby-sitting employees.

Leadership

As an entrepreneur, you have already demonstrated that you are the kind of person who likes to give orders, not take them. If you had employees working under you, then you have already demonstrated that you are capable of leading people and getting them to work together effectively as a team.

Able to Meet Deadlines

In your business, it is likely that you were forced to juggle many different tasks, prioritize conflicting demands, and meet multiple deadlines. You are able to determine what is most important, and get the most important task done first. This is an important skill in the business world, and you should highlight it to your prospective employers.

Organization

There is a lot of planning that goes into running a business, both on short and long time horizons. Be sure to emphasize all the paperwork you had to keep up with on a daily basis. You likely had to send out invoices, prepare legal and financial documents, create business plans, and manage your budget.

Creativity

Besides being an organized person, you were also a creative person. You had to constantly think about how to do things better. You were an innovator. You have the characteristics of someone who is an originator and an investor.

Able to Sell

In addition to managing a company, it is likely that you had to learn how to sell. You had to sell and market your product and services. You had to learn how to attract and retain customers. You had to learn how to talk to customers and to put yourself in their shoes.

Self-Discipline

As you ran your business, you developed the habit of overcoming the temptation to do less productive tasks. You are a self-starter and a person with initiative. You have the self motivation to get the job done correctly every time.

Focus

Another skill you likely picked up along the way is focus. There is no one more productive than the employee who can block out distractions and focus exclusively on one task to completion. While most employees will spend the majority of the day in idle chit-chat and checking their email, you will be diligently focused on the task at hand.

Company Oriented

As a business owner, you can see the big picture from the employer’s point of view. You know that their main focus is to make a profit, and you will do everything you can to help them achieve that goal. You are aware that your value to the company will depend on how much you help contribute to that objective.

With all of these skills, it is important that you don’t speak of them as personal accomplishments. Rather, what you want to communicate is that each of these qualities will be a contribution to the company. They will help the employer get what they want. Be confident in the fact that you are probably the candidate who can contribute the most value to the employer, and then strive to communicate that.
